Is this too much rust to drive?

Bought this 2001 Subaru last summer, used, in Texas (but don't know the history of where it's been before me). I love it, feels like a solid car, finally took it to a mechanic and one of them said it shouldn't be driven, that the rust could collapse it at any moment, while the other guy in the shop said he'd just keep driving it til something happens. I've been erring on the side of caution - I have a kid and don't want to risk anything happening especially while he's in the car - but I'm so sad to hear that I basically bought a junker, especially since I really enjoy driving it. Be honest with me. Should I keep this off of the road or does it look safe?
